Sylvie

Sylvie arrived at Cottontail Cottage as a tiny orphan after a severe fall from her nest during a summer storm. Despite immediate medical care and months of rehabilitation, Sylvie sustained a spinal injury that left her with limited mobility in her hind legs. Because she would not be able to forage, evade predators, or survive independently in the wild, she was deemed non-releasable.

Today, Sylvie thrives as one of our beloved ambassador animals. While she cannot return to the forest, she plays an essential role in helping others understand the challenges wildlife face every day. Through educational programs and community outreach, Sylvie helps teach children and adults alike about habitat safety, the importance of keeping trees protected during nesting season, and what to do when wildlife is found in distress.

Her curious personality and gentle spirit make her a favorite among visitors, and her story reminds us how small actions can make a big difference for native wildlife.

Did You Know?

Eastern Gray Squirrels build leafy nests called dreys high in tree branches. Baby squirrels are born blind and completely dependent on their mothers for survival during their first weeks of life. Storms, tree trimming, and habitat loss are some of the most common reasons young squirrels are admitted to rehabilitation centers.

Sponsor Sylvie

Your support also helps fund the rehabilitation of hundreds of native mammals each year and ensures animals like Sylvie continue educating the next generation of wildlife caretakers.

Help Us Support Wildlife

We rely on donations from our community to provide rescue, medical treatment, rehabilitation, and education programs. Every contribution helps us create second chances for native wildlife and expand awareness across New York.
